I found this short clip of her.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gnS2N-QUzj8&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gnS2N-QUzj8&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Although this is only a few seconds long, it looks like she has really good form. This may be a "left handed complement", but she looks like she doesn't have the natural talent of Finch or Abbott, and therefore she may know more about teaching the fundamentals.

She also seems like a very nice person. Anyone know anything else about her?

Yes, there are some of us out here who do not have the well known name but have a pretty good idea on how to pitch and how to teach it also.

Hey Stan,

How much faster would she throw if she rocked bacK? I'm gonna guess 5 or 6 more mph.

I believe Marc knows her and has worked with her in the past. As far as speed, I clocked her in the mid 60s (game speed) when she was 17 or 18. She is one of the pitchers for RVP.

It's Lauren Bay. Played professionally with Chicago Bandits and Philly Force was named NPF co-pitcher of the year with Jennie Finch in 2005.

Most strikeouts by a pitcher at the 2004 Olympics with Canadian National Team and another strong showing in 2008 in China.

Was consistently at 66-67 mph for many years. Sometimes would get up to 68-69. In the last few years, following several serious injuries - wrist surgery (missed a whole year in 2007) and stress fracture in foot before that - she was more in the 64-66 mph range.

Kinda hard to rock back standing one just one leg.

The mechanics she is demonstrating does not appear to be of a pitcher that DOES rock back.

In my area we have had a drill similar to that one for many years. We call it the 'fall forward drill'. We use it to teach a young pitcher to get the center of their body weight forward enough before she starts her push from the rubber. That way she is pushing more 'forward' and less 'up'. More energy being spent on going toward the target than straightening back up.

BTW, her brother is Jason Bay of the Red Sox.

Every year the Canadian national team does a clinic for kids the day before the start of Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C. Last year Lauren and Danielle Lawrie (#1 pitcher for the Washington Huskies and off to a 12-0 start with a 0.15 ERA this year) did the pitching portion and were great together. Lauren is a wonderful person.

Also, she is from Trail, B.C., an amazing little sports town in the middle of nowhere straight north of Spokane, WA.

Coach Stan,
First off this is a drill that removes the rear leg to focus on the drive leg so a rock back would not be possible during this drill. Therefore, we do not know from watching this clip if in full form she does not incorporate the rock back. But, for sake of argument, assume she does not rock back. She is a successful pitcher and coach why would you mess with what works for her. Maybe she tried the rockback and did not like it or it did not work for her. Everybody out there is different, what works for one person may not work for another. To say this accomplished pitcher would be better if.... is rude if nothing else. The rock back, backswing, double pump, etc, does not improve everyone. This young woman has had a successful career beyond the hopes and dreams of 99% of the girls who step foot on the rubber. To second guess her individual style and abilities is on par with you trying to walk out on a major league field and give their pitchers advice.
