It's not all about speed

We had one of our org's 18U pitchers come and throw to our 14U team last evening. Her FB was low 60's and our girls were hitting it. It was her movement and offspeed pitches that they struggled with. She had a very good CU and screwball and a nice curve. They were having a tough time hitting those pitches cleanly or even making contact with them at times. The straight up FB would get tagged.

My daughter is not blessed with great speed, not bad speed just not great. Like I discribe her, average speed with above average movement and location. The head of our organization who does our college recruiting told me the other day that every coach loves speed, especially college coaches but when the game is on the line everyone of them wants the girl who can put it right where they want it on the mound. Now if that happens to be a girl with great speed too, then that's a huge bonus.
