I send my 7yo to a speed and agility class for this reason. She is very fast and runs track in a 9yo division. Her problem is that just like a sprinter it takes her a second to get to full speed. At 20 yards she will barely beat kids, but at 40 yards she will be 7 or 8 steps ahead of them. Her favorite race to run in track is the 200m.
I have two DDs and DD #1 actually has the opposite problem. She is 18 and is in her first year of college and she accelerates very quickly. Her jr year of high school she ran track and she ran 100,200, 4x100, and 4x200. My DD was probably tied for the fastest girl on the track team but the tack team was really slow so that’s not saying much. My DD would always lead the 100m by a good few steps until the 50m mark and then she’d start to get passed but she would still be in the top 3 until the 65 meter mark and that’s when the long acceleration of track players helped almost everyone pass her. She got 8th of 16... so let’s just say she went back to softball the next year but she does want to do indoor track because of the 60m dash which both me and her believe she could do well in. Her favorite was the 4x100 because she’s really good at running turns and not too good at running straight so she enjoyed running the curve and passing people who passed her in the 100m dash.
