🙂 Sharing this Glove work video on fielding dirt pitches (training workout).

The goal is cut the ball off in front of our chest and transition in front to get the ball into our throwing hand immediately.
Can cut off the trajectory of the spin on pitch. Great for glove range out front, even when the catcher is moving our body to the sides and the pitch is still spinning away from us we can get on it.
Just as a Fielder would attack a grounder.

(No need to bring glove backwards to side of our body to transition. May notice at the beginning of the video the catchers are bringing their glove back a little bit and I stop and instruct them about field and transition in front)
* Get ball in throwing hand immediatly!

Thank you for sending an email to ask~
Do I teach catchers just starting out to do these mechanics?
(Good detail to add.)

Answer: Yes!

Amazing what consistent repetition training can do for glove work!
Equally helpful is the transition development and efficiency that comes from it to
Throw Runners Out!

Can you comment on the location of the throwing hand? It seems to be exposed...maybe it's just the one catcher.

Can you explain why you have them do this from their knees as opposed to them starting in their normal receiving position?

This is dirt pitch recovery training.
Specific to the task at hand.
Glove and transitioning.
Foundation is legs and torso this reinforces the posture in the position when on knees.
To support shoulders, arms and glove work.

The throwing hand is coming in to transition ball out of glove.
Can also assist if the ball comes out of the glove, especially can happen due to spin on the pitch.

Just as a Fielder would attack grounders. Or a Fielder digging a throw out of the dirt and needing to transition into throwing the next play.

Can see the efficiency in the mechanics of dirt pitch recovery transitioning into throwing.

While the catchers are trained to move left and right at the beginning of the video can see the catcher working on glove range.
Do this because the spin on pitch often moves away from the Catcher.
Sometimes even when the catcher is moving to the sides Glove Range is still needed/helpful.

Control the ball to control the game!

Rad what are your thoughts on catching with one knee down? Do you teach it? Should you do it only when there are no runners on?

There are some discussions on that.
Including @softgabby wrote some good information regarding her journey with her catching.
✔️Found and bumped her post for content.

As to knee down
* I would never start with my knee down.
Specifically because catchers need to be able to react to the pitch defensively and putting knee down is not athletic position.
Limits mobility.

Always best to see what the pitch is actually doing while it is in the air before making any adjustments.

As far as framing
Have experienced that less body movement is generally better than shuffling around with the body while the pitch is coming in to try and frame it.
That said,
On low pitches some catchers do drop knee out of either natural habit or can be purposeful for catchers to come down on one knee.
*One knee apon receiving is not new.

Always prefer to see what the pitch is doing first!
I choose a catching stance that starts with the ability to be explosive and mobile!
Two legs, muscles engaged, ready to react!
