I like baseball outfielders gloves (12.5" - 12.75") for softball use as a coach/dad. Lots of options at whatever budget you want.

If you're growing a pitcher, you're going to want decent hand protection pretty soon. Get your thumb joint bruised a couple of times and your urgency will increase in a hurry.

Will a Baseball catchers mitt be large enough for a 12" softball?

I use a baseball knuckleball catcher’s mitt. I have a very large hand and needed the hand stall large enough. 3 years and a ton of bucket duty later and it’s doing just fine.

I'd recommend one of each, a catcher's mitt and a fielder's glove. For bucket dad duty, I used a Wilson A800 - no longer available - for about 6 years. DD finally wore a hole in it... about 4 weeks before heading off to college where apparently my catching services won't be required. Check out Shoeless Joe gloves for a fielder's glove. A little off the beaten path perhaps, but I've used it for many years and it's very comfortable. A 34" baseball catcher's mitt should serve nicely as far as size goes.
