No the spine isn’t the axis. You coil under the head, but that doesn’t mean the spine is the axis.
[Wait until he discovers the spine is connected to the neck/head]

If you look at catcher view videos, you will clearly see the rear hip is not the axis. The rear hip/shoulder rotates away from the plate, and the front hip/shoulder rotates forward. Plus the Conservation of Angular Momentum demands that the fastest rotation uses the smallest diameter (the spine at center). The rear hip axis would be a very slow 'gate' swing,

"with the hips out in front of the back foot"

I like what you said here. That is correct-and important..

Note: Why does the axis matter? It's just in the weeds nonsense, right? No.

When you accept the spine axis theory, and you try to stride forward, you instantly have a 'eureka' moment where it's so, so easy to perform a high-level stride forward with a coil. You simply think about turning both hips and shoulders evenly, and forget about the leg and everything else.

If the spine was the only axis everyone would be a two legged hitter! 😜

Can really tell when they "spin off" the ball vs staying on the ball. Apparently Japanese is a very wordy language, most all videos I've watched the instructors speak alot
