So Cal
Lots of things can affect pop time, but the thing I see holding up young players most often is the speed of their feet. Speeding up the tempo of the dance frequently results in an improvement in the speed of everything else in getting rid of the ball.

In 12U, we had a couple of catchers that were pretty opposite. One had a strong arm, but slow feet. The other had a weaker arm but got rid of the ball very quickly. The girl with the weaker arm was always quicker in getting the ball to the base.

I haven’t done much measuring of pop times for my DD over the the years. But have measured her at 1.8 from game video a few times last year (14yo, 14U/HS). This was from last HS season...

Glove to glove.
Or when ball hits the catcher. Dirt pitch pop times matter too!

Pretty standard.

Fury_Mike got #'s?

Let's see what the consensus here is on DFP for those pop times and back pics!

ZAP AT YA

I probably was not clear in my comment. Yes pop time is glove to glove, but some measure having a ball tossed to the catcher, and some have the catcher start with the ball in the glove, arm extended and start timing on the catchers first movement:

Here is what I have on National average for measurables. Catchers are at the bottom:

This can't be correct, someone I know has a U14 daughter throwing in the mid-60s. I told him I found that hard to believe, but he knew it was true because he clocked her himself.

These are national average numbers, and probably cover a wide range of competition levels. There are certainly some 14U pitchers who can max. out in the 60s (I've seen quite a few), but there are many more that barely get into the 50s. My DD faced a HS pitcher last year whose best speed was low 40s.

DD’s team won the TN State Championship her junior year with a junior ace who threw 63-65 and can really spin it. Her backup was a senior who could throw a 50 mph drop curve that just touched the plate 95% of the time. They made a great combo!

Absolutely 14yr olds can throw in the +60mpg range.
Very consistantly experience this.
65 even 68 mph.
Early recruitment days showed there stuff with college coaches speed gun in hand.

Now also utilize laser camera stuff. Like allisters on deck athletic testing. Good stuff!

Takes more than a strong throw to have a great pop time! ;)

Lets throw runners out!

Are you talking pitchers or catchers?

Eric you are correct. These are national averages collected from a variety of sources. When I get to my computer I’ll show the fastball velocity average and top 6 percentile.

if you have a 14 year old throwing in the mid 60’s you are in the top 1%
