ENCOURAGE
Young catchers training with 12" ball.

Was asked about catchers being able to reach 2nd base starting 12u. Why some have such a learning curve when moving up from 10u smaller ball.

Well the obvious...
Mechanics and adjusting to
Ball size
&
Weight of ball.

Instructing
12" Ball is all i use! Hitters too!
The Real softball!

Results are fantastic!

Every catcher have worked with
(yes teaching throwing mechanics with all catchers)
9 year and up, who has started training with 12" ball are reaching 2nd base easily by 12u
&
In 10u are firing the smaller ball to 2nd base in the air, level ZAP !
*Get your defense ready because here it comes :)

In my opinion*
Even though hands are smaller
Grip strength and muscles grow with training.
The task of throwing 12" ball
does not suddenly need to be
re-adjusted at 12u level to grow
muscle memory strengths/habits to then learn adjustments that come with size and weight.
( Larger ball feeling awkward + add weight )
These things have already taken place!

Interested to read other experiences with transitioning to 12" softball.

I agree with this for pitching and catching. I have pitchers go through all warm ups with a 12" ball from the time they begin pitching. Then after warm switchback to 11" if 10u and under for walk throughs then full motion pitching from 30 feet then 35 feet.
