Just anecdotal info but 3 of our girls garnered interest from coaches who just happened to stop by and watch our games. They kept coming back to our games and asked for more info about them. These were schools these girls never contacted.

While this may be good for their ego what does it really mean? Lets put this into context. Are they schools the players would even consider? Of their top 5 schools where do these new schools stand? Do they even make their top 10? What are the next steps with these schools? Camp? Visit? This happens to us in showcases regularly, but when it is an obscure school, a light year from home, with little to no money it is really of no consequence. Unless it is a school that a player would seriously consider attending and it actually leads to further action, it is as you say "just anecdotal".

How does it make a team and or girl look good getting the snot pounded out of them by the Hotshots who think went 7-0 and gave up 2 runs while scoring 62?

I would think that if you're a lower-level team like Pitt, playing the in ACC and losing 40 games against tough competition, seeing a pitcher who can keep her composure against a much better team while getting the snot beat out of her would be valuable. Everyone dreams of going to a big showcase and getting discovered by Mike White, but there are a lot of teams out there that are going to value grit as much as a 60 mph riseball. At least I hope so, as DD has loads of the former and little chance of achieving the latter :)

From a purely recruiting perspective, a good/stud player on a mediocre team has a much better chance of being discovered when playing a team that will annihilate you than playing against a team which you can beat as the good team will likely have coaches watching them. Of course, as has been said here, you shouldn't approach recruiting that way (e.g. just hoping to be seen).

Two were high academic DIII programs - one in state and one the next state over from where we are located, and one was a high academic DI school in the same conference as other schools the player has been interested in.

CAN'T BE? Did they also win the lottery that night? Are they movie stars now?

It would be interesting to understand why they were noticed. Was it performance on the field or was it performance in the class room? I have seen much more of the latter and less of the former. There might be lightning in the bottle that occurs as a coach is passing by but quite often it is the coach asking the college services person for the travel team to point out those uncommitted high GPA/high test score kids.

The take away from this for players is that it is a lot easier to be noticed based on your performance in the classroom.

What is your assessment of what they were doing that garnered that interest?

Two were pitchers and one was a catcher/SS. The pitchers pitched against very good Cali and southern teams and kept us in the games while the C/SS laid out and made some great plays. It was initially their efforts on the field that got them noticed.

So at the end of the day, D9 was a wash for anybody not playing at WWOS. The teams at Fortune Road were lucky if they got four games in with all the rain (many got only three), same thing for Winter Haven. The Space Coast teams were too far away to expect any coaches to be there, and certainly the coaches I spoke to said they would not be heading out there. WWOS fields actually drain water, so many of the "chosen ones" got six or even seven games in over the weekend.

My guess based on the number of disgruntled parents and coaches at the tournament is that KOD will start seeing the number of teams drop over the course of the next few years. It's blatantly obvious that he doesn't care about being fair or even creative with the scheduling. If you're at Fortune Road, you're probably a NJ or PA team playing other NJ and PA teams. If you're a CA team at WWOS, you're likely playing other CA teams. The chosen few teams at fields 12-15 at WWOS got to see good competition and a large number of coaches. Everybody else got hosed.
