DD is playing 14U and coach moved her to SS from 3B. Couple questions:

1) in the market for a new glove and what size is recommended for SS?
2) DD has been doing well but looking to get better on throw downs. Any good drills, videos, etc to look at so we get better?

I don't have any answers, but number 2 is a great thing to get good at. I see this as a skill that is often lacking at 14U

#1) 12" gloves have always worked for my DD at SS, you'll probably get several different answers for different sizes.......
#2) My #1 gripe is for a SS to not let the ball travel to the bag!! Or even at earlier ages catching the ball 3' in front of the bag and then trying to dive back and tag the runner?? Catch the ball at the bag, even if that means catching a short hop on every throw, SS should be able to catch a short hop!!

All four of these are 12" baseball gloves!

For throw downs, she does not need to make any attempt to block the ball. She has fielders covering the throw, so no need to leave the bag.

It's better to make a wild stab at a poor throw and try to tag the runner out then moving off the bag to block the ball.

LOL. I've been doing this but she asked for other drills. Gets boring doing same drill but she is making improvements.

When covering the 2B bag, which is better (or more common) to straddle the bag or get in front of the bag to receive the throwdown?
