So for all the people that dismiss D3 Softball programs because they just aren't that competitive. UT Tyler begins it's first year as a D2 program by going 10-0 and is ranked #4 in the country by the NFCA. Mike Reed started the program from scratch and it's a pretty amazing feat to see such early success in the transition. There is really strong softball being played at all levels. If you are in the recruiting process, I encourage you to consider all Divisions.

I'm a hitting coach in Crosby and I work with Haleigh Swinney (she's from Crosby) during the off season. She speaks very highly of Coach Reed, and by all accounts, it looks like he's building a powerhouse over there.

Reed is VERY demanding and is not everyone's cup of tea. He is looking for the right players that are willing to compete for their positions and to do the work to win a Another National Championship. Unfortunately, there is a lot of turnover. The ones that stay are the one's that have bought in and will grind it out.

Haleigh cracks me up because he's got her so trained to "wear it" if it's inside; whenever I throw one inside she'll stick her elbow out from time to time.

Tangent: That is a NCAA rule change I would like to see happen (and then emulated on down) ...

Right now, a player moving deliberately to get hit is a dead ball and ruled ball or strike by its location. This has not stopped batters from rolling the dice and still moving into a pitch that is entirely in the batter's box. What do you have to lose? If the ump doesn't catch you, you get first base. If the ump does catch you, it is still a ball.

I would love to see a batter deliberately moving to get hit called as a dead ball strike, no matter the location.

UT Tyler has been preparing to do this across all their sports for a few years. Really been investing in their programs.

St Thomas(Mn) is being forced to do this... though there was a rumor they might skip D2 and go D1

All about how seriously the college wants to invest in their programs.
