We have a left handed 1st baseman. on bunts down the 1st baseline we has her coming down with 2nd covering 1st. Because she is a lefty she has to make an extra turn to throw.

How do you guys cover bunts and slaps down 1st when your 1st baseman is a lefty.

I don't see how a lefty is doing anything extra compared to a righty. Both should be turning the same amount (just in opposite directions) as they field the ball, and the lefty has a slight advantage of having a better lane to throw without the runner being in the way (sure, there's the running lane, but we don't want to rely on those calls being made).

When my dd pitched for her 18U team and we knew a slapper was coming up, we’d actually keep 1B back, have 2B play up a bit, and dd would cover 1B side. She was quick so it worked out well for us. Many teams try not to utilize their pitcher as a “fielder” so not sure how this would work for other teams. Bunt defense was always corners up no matter if 1B was L or R.

The left shouldn’t make an extra turn but she does have to approach the ball differently…

With quicker Runners second base is going to have to beat the runner to the bag and get there in time to snag the throw. *after waiting to see if batter hits or not.

Consider leaving first base back. Especially with a right-handed pitcher that's a much easier task for her to throw to first..
Also, The catcher is already heading towards first to cover that bunt toward 1st.

Turning our body throwing behind us is adding a 180* with our body. Which can add one or two steps for a runner.

Time the different defensive options at practice. Will probably see clearly one will be more efficient than the other. *Remember when you are at practice the second baseman cannot just Dart over to first base right when the pitch is thrown. The second baseman has to wait for the batter to swing or bunt.

Add an important part about bunt recovery is~
The catcher does not have to wait to see if the ball is going to be hit.
The catcher can see the clearest that the batter is going to bunt and track the ball off the bat.
The difference in reaction time can benefit the defense.
Recommend catcher work on exceptional range. Work on bursting explosive attack!

* added recommendation
From an athletic catching crouch using legs!
