Let's look at this from the defensive coach's point of view. I don't give your best hitter any swings. International walk and call the infield in to the mound and clarify what we do with the ball in play. Which runner beats us and a calming word at the end to communicate confidence.

Having seen/experienced what happens trying to throw around "best hitters"...
Its a hard task...

If the intent is dont throw them anything they can reach...
( cuz you dont want them to touch at all)
it is best to just walk them.

If the intent is dont throw them anything good,...
*Now its a competition!

There is an unwritten myth/lengend
Anytime a team gets a free walk/base.
It will end up working against the team that gave it.
*Anyone else experience/know of this?
....pitchers parents???? ;)

Wouldn't the number of swings and misses at these types of pitches be greater than the results shown in this video? Also, isn't Ted William's diagram of his BA with pitch location representative of most hitters in MLB? If you go by the notion that these hitters saw these balls better, wouldn't the ones that swung and missed think at the time that they made the swing that they saw those pitches well?
Think the pitcher may get dejected if he is facing a good bad-ball-hitter ;)

Can remember playing Cal State Fullerton, then defending World Series Champs.
Up to bat came right handed hitter. Mega power hitter!
Pulled a very outside low drop curve that was atleast 5" into the left batters box....all the way over fullertons hr fence,
over the gap dividing fields,
landed on the baseball field....
(This was at their original sb field. With the old debeer/diamond white softballs and bazookah sized bats !)

Looked at our pitcher,
think we each had the same expression.
Eyebrows up, eyes wide open...
"Holy Sh=t!!!"
It was an intense moment early in the year,
i remember as

"What do you prefer a HIT or a WALK ?

2 outs, time expired.
Team needs 1 run.
Opposing coach intentionally walks 2 consecutive batters. They both end up advancing to 2nd & 3rd during the current at bat.

2nd best hitter on the team is up. Had a mediocre game but is a great pressure hitter and fouls off anything close.

I was excited for our team and to see how my player would perform.

The other coach did walk our #1 hitter and my other player who's also tied for being the 2nd best hitter.

Single for the win. The other coach did what he thought was best but our team wouldn't be denied.

What he didn't know but should've.

Our #1 hitter couldn't handle pressure. Strikeout or fly were probable.

The other player walked had grounded out to SS more to this team than any other we played.

I'd give a 50/50 chance max with the batters he walked.

It went up to 80% with the batter he wanted to face. I want a player with the least emotion, or most confident player (almost machine like) batting in this situation. Hard to beat a player who loves to win but not afraid to fail.
