My older DD plays softball at a less competitive travel level, and helps catch some. Never had a single lesson. (Ferris Bueller reference).

Time to upgrade her catchers gear from the used $5 chest protector. So it comes with this pad thingie on the throwing arm. What's it do? Do girls use it?

It’s just an extra/optional pad for foul tip protection.

I have seen catchers wear it on either side, but I would put it on the glove side since that’s the more exposed shoulder usually.57B3E93A-9464-400A-B305-3C56A1226462.jpeg

From a quick google image search of "college softball catchers" I see it on one player out of dozens.

My guess is they are willing to deal with the slight nuisance that that extra pad creates if it protects their throwing shoulder or catching shoulder on even one foul tip. Especially considering durability with catchers is always a premium. If you catch as many games as they catch over the course of a season I’m guessing they get hit in just about every body part possible.

On my team, I wear the optional shoulder pads. I also know I'm one of a few girls in our conference who wears them. Most don't. I really don't feel like taking a foul ball off my AC Joint. OUCH!
