Hope she’s good to go soon bmakj. If they would have had concussion protocol when I was a kid, I would have been on some list for a brain transplant!

Walk it off and rub some dirt on it were medically approved procedures!

California has had a law mandating the 'return to play' protocol' for high school for several years, and applied it to youth sports in 2017. NFHS has a free course on 'Concussions in Sports' https://nfhslearn.com/courses/61151/concussion-in-sports

Not sure about other states, but in Illinois all IHSA sports officials are required to take that course every two or three years (I don’t remember which). If we remove an athlete from competition, we have to file a special report. The athlete then has to be cleared by a medical professional (athletic trainer on site or doctor after the fact, not a friend or relative that is in attendance) before coming back. Part of our pre-game conference covers medical staff on site.

Do they go back to the Doc to have more tests done later to see if they are clear?

So concussion protocol would typically be keep them from all physical activities until all symptoms have gone away. Then you can start re-introducing physical activities, from light workouts all the way up to full speed practice as long as symptoms don't return. You stop and go all the way back to beginning if the symptoms return.

Good course! (and pretty quick and painless)

Here's the other major one that is very similar (our league requires this one, but I've done both multiple times).

(Also quick and painless)

Look in your area for a concussion clinic or specialist, and have your DDs (or DSs) do a baseline check BEFORE they get a concussion. Makes it harder for them to fib their way out of the protocols later, and usually free.

It Is certainly a different world than when I hit my head sliding into 2nd (college league, no helmets) and sat in the dugout for three innings saying I was fine before I was able to recall anything! Contrast that with a friend in a severe bike crash (helmet saved his life), concussion protocols, dark room, no screens, no reading for SIX MONTHS! We have learned a LOT! Time to get us dinosaurs to start utilizing it!

I realize this is a little older but my daughter had what ended up being a concussion back in May. She fell out of a wagon and bumped her head on the sidewalk. Happened on a. Friday evening, all weekend she was ok with what we thought were just a minor headache that Motrin would knock out. Then on Monday morning she was getting ready for school and as she was talking to us, she started staring into space, then started freaking out bc she lost her vision, and then fainted right as I caught her from falling. Took her to the sports medicine clinic in town and sure enough it was definitely a concussion.

She had to have no school for a week, had to stay inside for 2 days, and. no electronics for 3 days. On the 3rd day she could go outside but only with a hat and sunglasses on. Fourth day she could have a max 30 mins of tv but still no tablet. Fifth day was an hour of tv and it escalated by 30 mins each day. She was also excused from her LEAP testing the week after that bc they didn’t want her having to concentrate on any one thing for an extended period of time.

It was a crazy situation when you look back on how things were handled back in our day when we hit our head o got rocked in a game. Makes me wonder just how many times as a kid I had what was probably a concussion.
