They are hunters of the next base.
I introduced the basehunting motivation to the girls this week, and boy, did they take to it. They grabbed about six to eight extra bases more than they normally would have and only missed two opportunities. They were proud to get that extra base. Normally they run like prairie dogs; get to a base for safety, then stick their heads up and look around to see what's going on.
Thanks, Rolling Hard!

IMHO baserunning is largely overlooked in practices and thus games. In the beginning some players are actually scared to lead off. They go base to base and can cost runs. We use a stop watch so the players know their speed. Knowing speed and quickness allow for intelligently aggressive baserunning. Practice at game speed, keep your eye on the ball/watch the coach and go until you can go no further without being out. The more pressure you put on the defense the more mistakes they will make.

Important that 1st baseman learn to pivot quickly and fire. 1st basemen that take extra steps drives me up the wall.
Communication helpful
in that situation.

Defensive Goal
Hesitating runner = an out
No matter which way they go.

Instincts are learned by being given the opportunity to participate on our own.

Some coaches run the game by trying to make every decision for players.
imo, Can hinder growing/learning reaction=instinct.
Base running some say 'always' look at the coach.
imo, is unrealistic for that to 'always' be applied.
Example on stealing.
Lead off with a wild pitch or reacting to catchers mechanics on dirt pitches.
To steal. Thats a developed reaction= instinct.

While there are times coaches direct runners on bases,
For Stealing instinct~Agree with allowing players to read the ball and know where the defensive players are.
includes recognizing the catchers mechanics/skillsets.
Prefer players to learn and know their own skills to heighten the level of play on the field.
And~ (depending on situation in the game)
will allow runner to make their own decision to steal.
*(this reaction=instinct is also utilized on hits)
As for coaches directing runners on hits,
Generally thats for when the ball is hit behind the runner.
And/Or utilizing the runner to create pressure on the defense by directing the runner to continue running.
Generally~
Eyes on ball when its pitched.
Eyes on ball when its initially hit.
Eyes on coach approaching next bag.

It is equally important for coaches to make base running decisions (directing runners)
'befor' runners reach oncomming base.

Some great points here. We work a lot on recognizing where the OFs are and Reading ball angle off the bat. keeping our Shoulders to the next base as long as possible, by using timing (walking leads etc)

As a 3B coach, I consistently reinforce that my job is to stop you, not tell you to go or come to a base

@F_M~Like that approach as it puts responsibility in the runners mindset.

Like to say
THE GREEN LIGHT IS ON!
&
(for hitting!)
(for defense throwing runners out!)
