Responding to parent demands to make the game of fastpitch softball safer and more enjoyable for youth players, the ASA has increased its protective equipment requirements for all players. Here is a look at the new equipment, which will be mandatory for all field players as well as hitters and baserunners beginning in 2010.
"We expect the new equipment will slow the game down a little bit," said an ASA spokesperson who declined to be named. "But our priority is now and always has been the safety of the players who participate."
No word yet on new equipment requirements for umpires.
