Key points:

Allegedly occurred during 2018 fall season in Salinas California.

20 year old female coach accused of molesting player on 12u team.

Accused offender provided a cell phone to victim to communicate with her.

Abuse purportedly occurred after practices and “team building” events.

From the article: “The parents had been so unnerved by their daughter's relationship with her coach, Nott-Perez, they confiscated her phone and other electronics, police said.”

Post her picture, not sure that is right yet.

I always have a little mixed feelings about this.

No way anyone could abuse DD before she was little older and we felt she should take care of herself.

When you have 5 or 6 kids drop them of with me but at a minimum DD is with me.

I want a secret cell phone, where do they sell those?

Chicks don't get busted for this sort of thing, a dude coach would be hung from a backstop by his scrotum but a chick might get a little public shame and a slap on the wrist.
Double standards are awesome

Mugshot from news article. It is news when someone gets arrested. It also serves the purpose of identifying the accused offender. Your name isn't your true identity. Your fingerprints, your DNA and to some extent your face are a persons true identity. I dealt with criminals for many, many years. Most of the ones I dealt with didn't "look like criminals". They looked like you and me. They blended in. And I want parents to understand that you can't look at someone and gauge their propensity for criminality by their looks, their age or their sex. Their behavior, not their looks, gives them away. I'll add this: If you are a 20ish female softball coach in that same geography, I bet you are glad that there is a picture in the news that shows the world that you are not that person accused of a terrible crime.

Burner phone. A commonality of many pre-planned criminal acts. An innocuous item that some people use to save money but criminals use to avoid identification or detection. In this case likely a means to groom a child and avoid detection.

There is no reason for any communication between adults and individual children. None. It's simple. Make it a group, include the child's parents, or better yet go through the parents.

Edited to add after Quincy’s post: As the players get older, especially recruiting age, there are legit reasons for coaches to communicate directly. I have a hard time coming up with one with a 12u player.

That is a fair point, you would hope everyone locally knows.

A little younger then she is now DD's Team used groupme for all communications, parents were included. She was 16/17 last year and I am not sure if any parents were on he groupme but I am sure they were not discouraged.

DD has had her own cell phone forever, we do not check her phone but I am positive no coach has ever called it. If we are running late or they need something they call DW's cell phone.

Agree with this part 100%.

A predator is a predator. Gender has no bearing.
Except in public outrage/opinion and media coverage. Look at the school teachers, every month some female teacher gets busted for banging some junior high kid but if the genders were reversed and it was a male teacher and a girl student, there'd be a lynch mob

Every time I see one of these stories where it's a woman teacher, she's getting a prison sentence. I'm sure you can find a recent one where that wasn't the case, but I really don't understand where this comes from. It doesn't reflect the reality I'm seeing.

It's a crime, and it's treated as a crime. I'm curious to know what stories you're seeing where that's not the case.
