With all due respect Q, to a certain extent it is. Even one step forward on the pitch can limit your SS"a range by as much as 3 feet along the periphery of the outside edges of fieldable balls. Try it for yourself. Have your SS play one step behind the line and hit a hard grounder across 2nd base. When the ball actually crosses the base, have her stop and mark the furthest point she reached by her front foot at the time, whichever one it is. Now, have her play on the baseline and do the same thing. You might be very surprised by the difference.. There's a reason Auburn put the hole hoops on each side of a player as opposed to in fronthe of them. Now, if you're talking about a slow roller or attacking the ball hit more directly to the player as opposed to being more off to the side of them where they may have to range further, then we are in agreement.
