When DD was in 10U, all the other pitchers' coaches taught them pitching inside & outside. Guess what, they couldn't pitch strikes during the game. DD's coach, on the other hand, taught her to pitch right down the middle. Yes, that's right, right down the middle where my glove was. Instead, her lessons were focused on her form, how she started the pitch, how she finished the pitch, standing tall after the pitch, etc. We focus on 3 things to work on after every lesson, and none of them was inside & outside pitches. During a game, she aimed toward the glove and nothing else. That's her focus. True, she may give up some hits if the catcher didn't place the glove in the corner (it's 1st-year 10U afterall), but most of the batters were also 10U, so they usually wouldn't attempt to hit since they were so used to being walked, let alone making contact. DD would pitch 7-15 pitches, and her half inning would be over.
Don't do anything fancy by asking a young pitcher to learn to place the ball or throwing "hard". Focus on the basics of a good pitch instead. Placing the ball will come once she has a good control of her pitch.
