If you've ever had a class from a world renowned expert on a topic, you know that sometimes world-class experts can't teach.A good teacher is someone who can express himself/herself in a manner to help a non-expert learn.

That means that they can express an idea in many different ways and in many different forms so that a student can learn.

An acquaintance was a journeyman utility infielder in the major leagues. He had an opportunity to take a hitting lesson from Willie Mays. He says it wasn't helpful--because Willie Mays could do things that "mere mortals" couldn't, and thus never had to worry about things such as bat speed and picking up the spin on the ball.

Sluggers, I agree with you. One's personal success does not necessarily translate into automatic great coaching. There are some who cannot explain the things they do or why they do them. Plus they cannot understand why others are not as "talented" as they are. Magic Johnson was a great example of this as coach of LA Lakers. But someone who is world class at something, has actual experience at the craft and is able to articulate the what/how/why with words (and demonstration) is invaluable. We can only hope that person is teaching what they are TRULY doing themselves, not what they 'think' they are doing. I did a clinic in Seattle last year with Sue Enquist, formerly of UCLA. She had an older video series out on hitting which taught mechanics contradicting what is taught today. To her credit, she owned up to it and more or less said: "Throw those videos away". Inventions of Right view pro, dartfish, etc. have shown her that what she thought was correct actually was not what the best were doing, and she's changed her philosophies.

That being said, if you had a son who wanted to play football running back and be the best he could... would you take him to a camp run by Emmitt Smith (all time rushing leader) or Al Bundy (4 touchdowns at Polk High school)? 99.9% of the people would choose Emmit Smith and pray that he is teaching from his experience in the sport. Of course, I'd go to the Al Bundy classes on marriage but that's another topic.
