Wow ...

During the interim lay-off from all activities, the governing bodies of various levels of softball have found themselves with a little extra time on their hands. Several organizations’ rules committees have used this opportunity to take a deeper look at their rule books, prompting some surprising rule changes that will take effect before the next games are played.

Sidd Finch, NFHS’s Vice-President of Regional Activities in Northern Kentucky, said “This is an ideal time for us to fix some of those pesky loopholes that we often only address with interpretations. Since play has been suspended for so long, we feel implementing these as an amendment for 2020 is appropriate.”

Among the changes for the resumption of the NFHS season is expanding the runner’s ability to avoid a tag. Finch explains, “Given the world we live in, we need to make sure we keep our athletes healthy and safe. For this reason, we are extending the distance a base runner can deviate in order to avoid a tag. Runners will now have the full social distance of six feet instead of just three.”

The most controversial change being made in the name of health and safety is coming out of a joint announcement by USSSA and USA Softball. USSSA’s Assistant to the Regional Director Gareth Keenan and USA Softball’s Field Operations and Officials Liaison Tim Canterbury issued the monumental rule change this afternoon. “After careful and deliberate consideration, we are following the advice of the CDC on this matter. It has been determined that the COVID-19 virus can live longer on metallic and artificial surfaces than it can on natural substances like wood. Effective with play resuming in 2020, we will no longer allow the use of any metal or composite bats. This is an effort to protect the health and safety of our young athletes. When play resumes, ONLY wood bats will be legal, regardless of what stamps a bat may carry.”

Sorry this is a little late in the day ... TODAY ...

That gave it away for me before I even read the article. That was an all time great April Fools prank.
