going oppo will do that.

edit: see where the confusion lies?

Not everything was oppo, but there has been a trend that way for her recently, which is not her normal pattern. This has been largely about understanding why that's happening, and if it's for good reasons, or something getting out of adjustment.

Maybe you can clarify something for me...If going oppo results in a reduction in power, why do we want to hitters to go oppo if that's not the tendency of their swing? Some swings (Haley, for example) are built more for peak oppo power. Maddie's best power has always been LC-C, yet she keeps being told that she should go oppo (mostly her team coaches).

Thanks for the discussion, gents (and others 🤣 ). Time to hit the road for Las Vegas! - USA Preps Stars & Stripes showcase. It's supposed to be 102 tomorrow, and getting warmer from there - yuck! If Maddie doesn't hit a bomb every AB, she's walking home!!

Question of the day. Again, most of what we hear about hitting is backwards.

Unless you are a slapper, you shouldn't ever be 'trying' to hit oppo. You simply try to have a great swing, and hit the ball hard where it's pitched. Outside fastballs go oppo, etc.

going oppo is about seeing it deeper and committing later w the body and the bat. a shorter body turn and a shorter bat path should be the result. it’s reserved for kids w flying body parts and longer bat paths. it’s akin to stay ‘closed’ and ’stay short to the ball’.

going oppo w the bat is shortening the radius of swing. it’s a half-barrel release so to speak. Which results in less power. But later committal. More solid contact.

going oppo w the body keeps the hips in longer, so one can stay balanced longer and hence commit later If needed.

This all stems from what pitchers have done to hitters since the beginning.. at least 70% of pitches are away. So looking outside is beneficial. Physically, one can only stay closed and open suddenly(plate coverage)to adjust as opposed to opening early and trying to close quickly(impossible).

the inside adjustment is the ‘athleticism‘ in the swing. thats how I see it. Of course one can anticipate once in awhile etc etc.

Here in the PNW it’s going to be 102 Saturday and 108 Sunday. No games for us.
