Hey, guys. I have been noticing over the last week or so, I have been having pain in my left elbow going down into my hand. I don't have pain all of the time but I notice it when I do certain things like when I'm writing, helping mom with canning vegetables from out of the garden or bought from a local farmer's market or produce auction, gripping and swinging a bat and most importantly...throwing a softball. It seems to hurt most when I'm trying to make a quick throw down to a base or I'm throwing back to the pitcher. Has this been something your daughters have been through and what did she do? Can this be something I can wear a tennis elbow brace and play through or should I see the doctor?

I’m assuming you are a lefty and that’s your throwing arm. My daughter had the same issue last year. Doctor said she just needed to rest it for two weeks (no throwing) and then after that she wore a brace for awhile.

Your assuming right. I am a lefty. I'm trying to rest it...but with everything we're doing this time of year...it's hard to rest it, lol. I'm at a small tournament of friendlies and we played one game that I didn't play in. We ended up losing 3-1. I'm wearing a brace we picked up at Target and it seems to be helping somewhat. I don't know how its going to be when I play in our next game. If I'm still having a good bit of pain, I may have to go to our local walk in clinic or have mom make a doctor appointment.

Make an appointment with an orthopedist and make sure it is diagnosed correctly. If you have to shut it down for a couple of months, do that so that you are 100% healthy for the spring season. I know that you will heal fast than a middle-aged person, but you need to make sure it heals and doesn't become a chronic problem.

I may end up having an appointment made with my orthopedist. The funny thing is...its my surgically repaired elbow as well that's hurting. I did play all of our second game and the first four innings of our third game. I did play with the tennis elbow brace and I didn't notice near the pain in the elbow than what I had yesterday. The elbow is still sore...but not near as bad. I'm going to talk mom into taking me to the walk in clinic and get them to look at it before taking it up with an orthopedist.

DD had elbow tendinitis a couple of years ago, about the same time of year. We had her stop pitching, let her finish out the season at 1B (with ortho approval) then took a month off. We focused on her pitching and throwing mechanics when she came back (she's younger than you are; at the time she was only 9) and the issue hasn't recurred at all. I think for tendinitis you need rest more than anything else. I would definitely go get a diagnosis though.

Get it diagnosed ASAP. The pain going down into your hand indicates to me that it might be a nerve issue. Trying to play through it is very likely to make it worse. It might be better in a couple of weeks of rest, or it may take a few months, and need physical therapy.

Early this year, my DD had an issue that presented itself similarly to what you described. She was unable to throw for 10 weeks, and spent 8 of whose working with a PT. Her problem was related to a throwing mechanics issue creating a condition that irritated her ulnar nerve.

Another player on my DD's team also had similar pains, refused to shut down, and tried to hide the issue from her coaches and parents because she didn't want to let anyone down. It got to the point where she had to quit playing. That was over 6 months ago. She's still not playing. She eventually went to get it diagnosed, and it turned out to be a bone issue in her elbow.

Hey, Eric. My mom was able to get a doctors appointment this morning for after my orthodontist appointment. I did get it diagnosed and I have tennis elbow. Plus I'm supposed to wear a tennis elbow brace and I'm supposed to rest it for 2 weeks. Thankfully, the pain isn't constant. Its more when I am trying to grab or grip something. Also, I'll still be able to workout. So, I can still catch and block and cheerleading won't be effected with this injury.

I'm sorry Maddie had to go through what she did. How is she doing and is she back to playing? I'm just hoping my doc is right and I don't have the same issues Maddie did.

Gabby I’m glad you got it checked out. Like I said, that’s exactly the diagnosis and treatment my daughter got. The two weeks rest did help a lot, then she would wear the brace and it eventually did go away. Thankfully. Good luck to you and heal up quick!

Good luck, and I hope you get back to 100% action quickly.

Maddie actually had a new elbow pain (different spot than before) pop up recently, but seems to be doing okay now after a little rest and regular ice/Advil treatment. Overall, she's doing great. Even during her 10 weeks of no-throw limitation, she was able to bat, which made the time tolerable for her (barely - lol).
