I certainly see your point.

It shouldn't be more expensive to watch an amateur softball game than to watch major league baseball. You can get cheap seats at the Brewers for less.
The $35 is for tournament passes (i.e. up to 5 days). The daily fees for adults is $7 and parking is $5. Can you get into a Brewers game for less than that?

I stand corrected. I thought the $35 was for ONE day. That is different.

The ONLY time I have ever had to pay was in Mauston, WI, which was $5 entry fee per adult per day, free parking, and very nice facilities.

No, you can't see the Brewers for that kind of money, unless you have some kind of voucher. However, the local minor league team has free parking and cheap concessions, so the total cost is less that a day at this softball tournament.

ASA events around here vary from $5 to $8 per adult per day. Kids under 12 free. I've never paid for parking on top of the gate fee though. $35 isn't that outrageous.

Just an FYI,

For those teams that aren't using a "end of the season" tournament as a recruiting tool/tournament - NSA charges a $600 fee for team entry, no parking or entry fees for fans and it's been my experience they don't care if you bring in your own cooler.

NSA A was in South Carolina this year and NSA B was in NW Indiana. They have a few other "World Series" locations but those are the two big ones.

Cost is the one area that NSA beats their competitors IMO.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to ASA and Watertown WI for surprising everyone coming to the ASA northern nationals with a $35 park/field entry fee.

What a raping from an event i have never had to pay for before at the event.

It's not the money necessarily but the principle on the surprise rape.

See if i spend $1 at yer concessions.......

Don't lump ASA in your blame game. The park entry fee, if there is one, is set by the park and/or entity hosting the tournament, not ASA.

There are some extra costs for the host entity in running an ASA National Tournament. Having a gate is one way of helping to cover those costs.

Thank you for this clarification. The rumors of who was benefitting by the gate fees were all over the board in the end....

We ended up getting some good hardware from the tourney so the blow was softened

ASA awards their nationals to host organizations that bid on them. The hosts may be an ASA entity (e.g. local state/metro association) or an unaffiliated community group (e.g. civic/businesses). In OP's case, the host was Watertown Girls Softball Association - which apparently is the corporate identity of the Watertown Thunder org that runs both rec and travel teams according to their website. Here is an article about them getting the tourney - City lands national softball tournament.

Besides paying the fee(s) to get the tourney, hosts also incur additional expenses that ASA imposes (e.g. hotel rooms for ASA officials and umpires).

The parking fee was unusual from my past experience, however the gate fee was also much lower. Paying $15 to park and $20/adult is better than paying $35-40/adult that is common.

Initially this is true. However, the parking fee is usually daily. So if it is a Mom and Dad going to see DD play, you are upside down on the 3rd day. If it is week long National the parking can really add up fast.

I was comparing apples to apples - parking was $5/day or $15 for the whole tourney. I got the figures from the link you posted...

The last 4 years we played in the Midwest All Sanctioned World Series in Columbus Ohio. The facility has 32 diamonds. The city of Columbus charges 5 bucks a carload a day to park. Not to bad at all. Nice facility as well.
