You mean just throwing the ball at the runner will get them out? Dang we have been playing this all wrong!

I have seen many instances where one of our girls will throw/toss the ball at the runner. I have no idea what they would have ever been thinking, but the runner was never out.

I laughed when I read this, you are absolutely right! :D

This was a fall league game, for us it is a practice league to keep our girls sharp, to develop chemistry with new players and for new pitchers to get some innings in.

Had this been a tournament, I would most certainly have protested.

Thanks to everyone here for confirming what I thought I knew was correct. This forum is awesome!

Another point to consider....

Since you stated this was a fall league used for practice, etc., that may also be the case for the umpires assigned to your league.
We often use the fall leagues and tournaments here as a chance to get newer umpires games and see what umpires can do at levels that they may not normally work.

You may have had a new or inexperienced umpire on your game, by not protesting or at least questioning the call, the umpire may go on believing that his/her call was correct. Your protest should cause the umpire to get in the book and learn the rule properly. Just a thought and something to consider.

Ajaywill, good point. But the umpire association should pair the inexperienced umpire with a more experienced partner (if the fall league will pay for two umpires). Then the new umpire can get advice between innings and at their post-game conference.

The fall is always a good time for new umpires to learn. My DD's college coach would let the NCAA have their training and evaluation clinics at her school in the fall. It worked great for everyone. She got umpires for her fall tournament for nothing and umpires got real time game experience without the regular season pressure on them. Often there would be multiple umpires shuffled in and out during a game but everyone understood the purpose and there were no complaints.
