Just to bring everyone up to speed, CoachJD and I are both from Illinois. He is from the part of the state we call Chicago, (even if it’s a suburb),and I’m from rural Illinois. I’m only a few miles from being from rural Iowa. If I was from rural Iowa, or rural Ohio, CoachJD and I would get along fine but unfortunately since we are both from different parts of the same state, we are naturally sworn enemies. This is why he snipes me about my refusal to conform to his dreams of fall softball and calls me entitled even though I grew up poor and dirty in the middle of a cornfield.

Quincy and I , of course, are Not sworn enemies. Nobody doesn’t like Quincy. Sparkyguy isn’t half bad either.

This has been a fun post. I hope some of you have enjoyed it half as much as me.

I'm now caught up to speed, which is good since apparently I have heat with someone and didn't know it.

I'm actually from, and currently in (and coach in), Chicago, not a suburb. It doesn't matter, really, but I'm wondering if you maybe think I'm someone I'm not based on that Midwest Fastpitch comment (I literally had to google it to know what you were talking about).

I am not actually your enemy, and until tonight I had no idea you had a problem with me.

I also recommended my AD vote against moving softball to the fall, though you'd have no way of knowing that.

Gonna have to refresh my memory on that entitled thing. I probably said it, but I certainly don't remember why.

You're definitely right about one thing: Everybody likes quincy.

The sworn enemy thing is supposed to be funny. Should have been more comic book sounding, like “sworn mortal enemies”. But good comedy always has a shred of truth, and friction between the city and the rest of the state is that shred of truth. Softball seems to amplify that friction. And it surprises me how often the self fulfilling prophecy comes true that otherwise reasonable people will disagree based on zip code.

Yeah, that entitled thing didn’t sit well with me.

As far as the fall softball thing, who knows. Because of the tone of the other site, I don’t post there so I doubt it was anywhere but here. If you have never advocated for that change, it wasn’t you. Peace.

I asked my daughter her opinion. I've never played and don't really have one. She has been intentionally walked a few times and she hates it. This was her reply:

I want them to suffer as they throw balls, pitch by pitch. I want to see the look on their faces, as they realize that they are all failures.

Keep in mind she is 12. She cracks me up.

I like the way she thinks!

Pitcher should pitch the 4 pitches to get the walk. Yes, lots of stuff can happen. I shared this before. 2 years ago. Playoff game. Extra innings. Beastly hitter up to bat who already hit a dinger earlier in the game. Catcher signals for an IW with her right hand stretched out to the side. First two pitches are thrown as balls. Next pitch....whoops...too inside. Batter goes beastmode and hits over the CF fence for the walk off. The IW is part of the game but you should pitch the 4 pitches.

At bare minimum, make the pitcher/catcher call it and keep the ball live.

That at least creates the perception that the game is being played on the field even if the signal comes from dugout. It also creates a possibility of base running mayhem.

The biggest issue I have is that pitchers don't practice throwing "balls" enough. I am always surprised how hard it is to throw 4 consecutive balls off the plate even at the highest levels of softball.

My only issue with the NFHS IBB rule is you shouldn't be able to IBB to the 3rd out of the inning.

Had a situation last year where the 1B was ejected because the ump thought she was too aggressive on a tag. The next inning, the other team IBB 3 in a row to get to her spot in the order for the last out of the game.

That is so true! It's always a little crazy to see a kid hit a triple on an 0-2 count. Why was that pitch anywhere near the zone?? I wonder if it comes from the fact that from their first game in 10U they hear, "Just throw strikes!" By 12U they have more control but they have the habit of always trying to keep it in the zone.
