so usa 12u tournament. 2 outs runner on 3rd. batter hits a ground ball to ss and close play at first and field umpire calls br out at first. he is in the c position and starts walking across the field to set up for half inning.the 3rd base coach is trying to call time out and get his attention because he believes the first baseman pulled her foot. he wont listen...meanwhile defense team leaves the field and the batter runner goes into the dugout, then pu calls her out for leaving the field of play. i have looked throught 2 rule books usa and nfhs trying to find something just for my knowledge as to why that cant be overturned, why cant the br be placed at first the offensive coach went to the fu and he said she was out because the pu called her out even though the coach was trying to get the fu to check with his partner(which he refused). any thoughts?

before attempting to answer, did the base umpire ever go to the plate umpire and ask for help? and was the pulled foot question answered?

If the base umpire called her out, why did the plate umpire call her out again when she entered the dugout?

As for leaving the field of play, the base umpire called her out, why would she stay on the field? It is called umpire jeopardy, the umpire called the out and if for whatever reason he did go to the plate umpire and changed his call then you bring the player back out and put her on base.

I'm a little confused by your story.

Here is what I gather from the story

FU called her out at first.
FU said he didn't need help as he saw it?
Then PU called her out for leaving the field?

If this is the sequence then the runner is just out at first. Umps do not need to ask for help.

If he were to ask for help and the PU said she was safe but now out for leaving the field I imagine that could be rectified, but even if it can't then the run should count.

In this type of situation we always have our runners stay until we get it resolved to avoid this kind of mess.

I was in the stands and yes I am a umpire. I was watching my kids play not working and I try to not get involved in their games. I asked the plate umpire why he called her out and he said she left the field of play and I said that his partner called her out so she left because he told her to and that he should be able to resolve the situation and bring her back and put her on first. He told me he does all levels including college softball and there is nothing in any rulebook that says he can bring her back to first base once she leaves the field of play. And yes I dropped it and let him go back to work.

Yeah comp that is what I was thinking should happen but the field umpire wouldn't acknowledge the coach for awhile and when he finally did he told him that he wasn't going to ask for help and the play was over...I was really just wondering if anyone had this happen before and if there was anything anywhere about returning the batter runner back to first after she left the field of play. Idk why the plate umpire called her out he stood there watching her like you do when a batter has a u3k and walks to the dugout and you are waiting for her to realize or listen to all the people screaming to run.

Yes canyonjoe that is pretty close...out call, 3rd out...players leaving the field batter runner leaving the field coach trying to get a timeout and get the attention of the field umpire.. no avail plate umpire then signals out when br leaves field of play..coach asks pu to talk to fu..pu tells him to talk to fu...he walks over to fu and he tells him to go to the dugout she is out

Yes it can be corrected, don't have the rule number off the top of my head but it says the delay of a call or reversal of a call that puts either team in jeopardy the umpire can take whatever action is necessary to correct the situation.

Thanks at some point if you can let me know for my own knowledge I'd appreciate it. I thought it was something like that and I would think that they would want to get the call right. Would you as a pu go to your partner in this situation and talk to them or wait until he asked for your input like you are supposed to...if no one said anything I probably wouldn't but I would think if the offensive team was asking I would try to get the call correct but it's still the field umpires primary call...idk I just thought it was weird how they handled it.
