And the rule in softball is, if it has passed an infielder and the umpire judges no other fielder had a possible play, the runner is not out. So, apparently the umpire judged no other fielder had a possible play.

What does "possible play" mean? Does it only refer to being able to get a force out (or any out)? Based on what the OP said, it sounds like the rightfielder was moving to field the ball, and the deflection caused it to get past her (or away from her in another direction).

I'm not trying to stir things up, just genuinely interested in the interpretation of the rule.

It means the possibility of making an out, not just fielding the ball. If the ball has passed an infielder, other than the pitcher and no other fielder in the umpires judgement has the possibility of getting an out it's a live ball

Go to YouTube and type in baseball runners hit with batted balls. Everyone is called out and every ball goes past the first baseman holding the runner on. To me that is a hit ball past an infielder. Stupid rule for softball. How can you honestly say that rule is ok. A runner shouldn’t interfere with the path of the ball. Regardless if a fielder has a play on it or not

Yeah, now that is a reliable source

Dumbest rule in softball. How can a runner not be out if she is hit by a batted ball. I don’t understand why it matters if it goes past a defensive player who isn’t even close to the play. The runner still interferes with the play. Stupid stupid stupid. We don’t need special rules because they’re girls. Curious what’s the logic behind that rule. Cost my daughters team the championship

Because that means the defense had their opportunity to make a play and FAILED. Your daughter's team failed to win the championship because they didn't play well enough, no other reason.

BTW, this has been an official softball rule for over 80 years of which I can document

1936 Official Rules of Softball
Rule 27 - WHEN BASE RUNNERS ARE OUT
Base Runner Out if Fair Hit Ball Strikes Him Before Fielder Touches it
Sec. 10. If a fair hit ball strikes him before touching a fielder, and, in such case, no base shall be run unless necessitated by the batsman becoming a base runner, but no run shal be scored or any other base runner be put out until the umpire puts the ball back into play

The rule you just posted says if a ball strikes a runner before a fielder touches it they are out. Doesn’t say anything about going past a fielder 15 feet away

What’s to stop my team from purposely running into a ground ball to redirect its path. I know it’s a rule, trust me I’ve been looking at it all day. I’m just saying and it’s my opinion that’s a stupid rule. Thanks everyone for the replies

That’s basically the same thing that happened. The runner was hit while running to 2nd. She didn’t make an attempt to get out of the way. She wasn’t looking at the ball and I know she didn’t run into it intentionally but she should be out. Our first baseman who was I guess standing a little in front of 1st base. No where close to the play was the reason she wasn’t called out. I’m wrong to think she is out?
