So Im sure its the right call, just never seen it implemented tell now in my 2.5 years in 8U. We are talking USA Softball B State Championships. Situation was pitcher pitches a strike with runner on second, turns into delayed steal when catcher throws ball back. Pitcher fires the ball to third, overthrows and ball rolls into dug out. Runner is awarded home on a dead ball. This actually happened 2 times in one inning. Why I dont understand it is, that stealing home is not an option, nor is it an option to take more than 1 base per pitch. So Dead ball or not that runner would not be allowed to advance to home, or any base for that matter? But Im not really sure is why I ask. Turns out if you wanna know the rules you have to download a 14.99 rulebook to your iphone... lol Its pretty bad to loose a game in the state championship this way. especially when the dugout design perfectly facilitates a dead ball over throw to 3rd. But hey none of us argued. I did ask the HUC for a little clarification and I feel like before he understood my question, he told me to not even waste my time with a protest. Oh well guess we gonna have to win this thing the hard way.

Ball thrown into dead ball territory is a 2 base award from the runners position at the time the ball left the fielder's hand. So home is the proper award in the situation you presented.

These are local rules since USA rule book does not differentiate for 8U ball

Until about 2007, ASA 10u tournament rules had a closed home plate. Our local 10u rules are basically those 10u rules, and runner would get home in that situation. In California, 8u tournament rules are the circa 2006 10u tournament rules with a 5 run limit the first three innings.

Many people do not realize it, but what we knew as the 10U rules were the actual rules of the game back in the 30's

If I understand the OP correctly, they are playing with a rule that doesn't allow advancing more than one base on a steal. So if the throw did not go in the dugout and stayed live, the runner would not be allowed to score. So why should the runner be allowed to score because the ball went into the dugout? As MTR said, this is a local rule. I would think that "one base on a steal" would override "two bases on a dead ball".

We play with this rule in 10U rec (we also don't allow stealing home), and it doesn't matter where the ball goes on an overthrow, live or dead, the runner gets the base she was stealing and that's it.

You asked why the runner was given home and I gave you the applicable rule in every major softball rule set. If your league has alterations to the rules then you need to be asking someone in your league who is the rule interpreter.

Yes you understand what I was trying to explain. And it may be legal or not, still not sure if their are any 8U rules in place for these tourneys Local or other but it did cost us a game. Not the end of the world, they still played some great games this weekend and it was alot of fun. But It does seem like an illogical rule to enforce, if there is one. I could see if u had hot home plate, and the ball was in dead ball territory everyone gets a base vs. clearing all the bases on a ball that can not be played on, but when they are only aloud 1 bag per pitch and never home, just does not make sense at least to me anyway.

To start, that did not cost you the game, the poor play of the defense cost you the game.

Also the runner didn't advance more than one base on the pitch. Took 3rd on the pitch, scored on a subsequent play which was permissible in the old ASA 10U rules. Even in the original rules on which the 10U rules were based, the runner is entitled one base beyond the base to which s/he was advancing.

Thanks for trying to take a dig, but I am not one to play along. I was asking for clarification and I got it thanks to all that helped.
