As long as batter stands still your DD needs to figure it out.

The batter that she hit turned with a foot out of the box and looked at third base. When she turned she backed up right in the way like most of the team had been doing.

so what happens if P coming to cover runs into batter and knocks them out of the way. because if the batter does not move, that is what I am telling P to do, lower shoulder or hip check and move the batter. sorry, it is bush league to simply stand there in the way of defense making attempt at HP. throws to other bases are one thing, since it is not always predictable where the C might lean towards, so best bet is to stay still. but runner coming home there is only one place for play to be made, right handed batters box (I can see a lefty maybe not moving, but they may get cleated by their own teammate if they slide long). and I will tell C to throw it hard right to the spot (ie low and slighty to left of HP), and if batter is still there, so be it.

It’s even more bush league to lower the shoulder and knock over the batter.

The batter must avoid hindering the defense when a play is being made at the plate. Period. If she doesn’t, you may have interference.

If it’s not called, remain calm, and ask the umpire what they saw. Ask them why it wasn’t called. If they say anything about “no contact was made,” you’ve got a valid protest.

What I told my catchers in 10u was to gently.... and I made sure they understand I meant very gently.... underhand toss the ball at batter that didn't get out of the way, so the umpire would have to call something.

Don't mean to high jack this post but what is the batter to do? My DD (11yo) is a left handed catcher who complains to the umps that the batters are getting in her way on the throw down to third. This past weekend she had said something to the ump twice before letting the ball fly and smoking a batter in the back of the helmet. The batter was called out and the runners had to back due to interference. Why was the call made then and no other time before that?

For a right handed catcher throwing to third there is a specific crossover step that is done by the catcher to clear the (right-handed) batter and have an open throwing lane. For a lefty catcher I would have to review my notes (lefty catchers are rare).

The batter she smoked should not have been called out if she was in the box and not doing anything specific to hinder the throw.

This is poor advice. As others pointed out if interference is not called you simply ask the umpire what he/she saw and determine if they know the rule. If not you protest.

Second when defending the passed ball the catcher should be throwing to the pitchers glove and not a particular spot. From the short distance of the backstop throwing to a particular spot will get you into a lot of trouble and compound the problem. Have the catcher throw to the pitchers glove NO MATTER WHERE THAT IS. If you need the pitcher to have the glove in a particular area that is a separate conversation for the pitcher.

Last, pitchers are rare. No one passed ball is worth a pitcher getting hurt/cleated. That is rule #1....protect your players.

And that will get you P ejected and probably followed by you when you argue and try to use this lame excuse.

the batter has no right to be in the way of the play, there should be no penalty for contact with them. they are not a BR trying to reach a base or HP. on the other hand, the defense absolutely has the right to make a play. I was using a littler hyperbole, but I cannot see how the batter remaining in the box is in any way defensible. if they made contact with the ball, they either need to run to 1B or ball is dead. if not, they are not a part of the play, and if they are in the way (and no contact needed for this as is so often stated), it is should be interference. BB is no safe haven. perhaps the best way to consider it would be to consider them a retired BR. they have an obligation to not interfere with the defense, they have no right to any particular spot/lane (just like a retired BR does not have the right to the shortest path back to dugout, they are obligated to stay out of the way of the defense).

and much less chance of P getting hurt bumping batter out of the way then trying to apply a tag to BR coming in hard to HP. If you are going to protect them, just cede the run on any PB/WP with runner on 3B.

and sometimes you do have to throw to the spot (conditional upon seeing/knowing that the person is moving to that spot), much like C throwing to corner of 2B on a steal, it is SS job to get there, if C waits for SS to be there, throw will never be in time. same for a steal home, P knows where to receive it, and should be moving to get there, and C and P should have worked on this already to know the timing, etc.

there should be no penalty for contact with them.

So using your logic fielders have the right to malicious contact (lowered shoulders and hip checks) on any offensive player not advancing to the next base? So the batter and all retired runners better have their head on a swivel if they play against you? WTF?
