Ok, this is a weird one that happened today (12U USA game). Batter hits a clean single to outfield, rounds first. Our player throws to first to get the runner, overthrows, and ball strikes a player from the other team that was "in the hole"; emerging from the dugout during the play to go to the on deck circle. Should this be "dead ball", runners return to last base occupied? Their player should not have entered the field of play until the dead ball, IMO. Umpires allowed BR to advance to second, which IMO was the wrong call. Thoughts?

Most likely should have been ruled a blocked ball (dead ball) and returned any runners to last base touched when the ball became blocked. If, in the umpire's judgment, the ball being blocked prevented the defense from getting a possible out, the runner closest to home may have been ruled out

The other option here is that perhaps the player emerging from the dugout deflected the thrown ball that was going to go into the dugout. If that was the case, a ruling of dead ball would have been correct. If that was the ruling, any base runners would be awarded two bases from their position at the time of the throw. If the batter-runner had not yet reached first base at the time the ball was thrown, an award of second base would be proper.
