one out, runner at 3b, batter hits deep sac fly to right field.
runner tags up and scores.
opposing coach appeals saying runner left early on tag up.
field ump then calls her out.

questions:
1. how is this scored? is it still a sac fly? or just a standard fly out. and is the runner awarded an error for leaving early? or is she just simply out on the basepaths?

2. why does this HAVE to be an appeal play? why cant the field ump just call the runner out in real time?

thanks.

Because the rules in every stick and ball sport say it is a situation the defense must see and ask for a ruling on. The ONLY state that does let the umpire call baserunning infractions without an appeal is I believe South Carolina NFHS.

I think the latter, the out does not occur until the appeal is made by getting the ball to the base, so I would go with the 9-5 or whatever combo was used. But this is just an educated guess.

There's no such thing as a "base running error" when scoring (you may make special notations for your own team, of course). The TOOTBLAN should be an official base running stat, but it's not.
