Folks, help me with this ruling that I witnessed a couple times this weekend.

Playing on 300’ fields with temp fences at 200’. A decent line drive would roll to the fence and go under it and because of the delay of the roll, fielder hands going up, umpires noticing and checking the runner which is now rounding 1B.

Shouldn’t this be the spirit of the rule a ground rule double or triple? Both times it was a triple with one having the umpires not noticing for a few seconds.

Quincy,
You caught me talking northerner speak, post updated to “temp” fence ;). Fairly safe that we are not expecting high winds and snow flurries this weekend.

Any batted fair batted ball that goes through, under, bounce over is by rule a two base award from the time of the pitch for the BR and all runners. Again, from the time of the pitch. How long it takes for the ball to get there or players raising their hands are completely irrelevant

Sorry, not meaning to highjack your thread but what is a snow fence?

from the NE as well, a snow fence is a wire fence with wooden slats, typically installed on open fields to help prevent fallen snow from drifting onto roadways and such.

It was quite ridiculous that it was happening all of the time which makes me wonder if it was a local decision to do it this way.

One of the times it was a 2 man crew and the other was a 3 man crew that all discussed and reached the same decision to award 3b.

Thanks MTR for pointing out there is the batted ball to OB play and then there is the defensive play that is put OB. Apparently they were quoting the wrong rule and they were not willing to listen to arguments!!

Had this happen in our games 3-4 times this weekend with these same temporary fences and it was a ground rule double each time. There was never any discussion.
