Scenario... batter hits a long high ball to left field, the outfielder is clearly inside of the fence by 2-3', she "pushes" her glove upwards to catch the ball, but punches the ball upward and over the fence.
Since the outfielder was clearly inbounds, by 2-3', (and her glove wasn't over the boundary of the fence trying to "rob the batter of a HR" by pulling the ball back in to play), and she knocked the ball up and over the fence, is this an awarded HR, or a 4-base error?

No, neither the batter or outfielder are my DD...but happened in one of our games, and I'm curious

Thanks

If it was a routine fly ball that the fielder missed - I would rule that an error. If she had to sprint to the ball only to have it knock off her mitt and go over, I would rule HR.

This one definitely depends on "effort". If it is a routine ball, just a few steps to get it and she misplays it, then it is an error. But honestly, giving an over the fence HR on an error is very rare. If she made an extraordinary effort (sprinting, laying out, huge jump) to try and catch it and the ball went over, no error. HR all the way.

IF she was standing back near the fence or only backed up a few steps, stood there, watched the ball come down without significant impact from the wind or sun, and THEN knocked it over the fence, it's an error.

Anything else, it's a HR. One of these happened with DDs team last weekend. The OF was in a full sprint to the fence, stuck her glove up to try to grab the ball, and knocked it over.

Have to see it, but from the description it doesn't sound like she was just standing under it and missed it. If she if running towards the fence to me at least it stops being routine an thus makes it HR.

Exact scenario happened in a high school game this spring. Scored an error. In this particular case it was definitely routine. She actually tipped it twice before it finally went over the fence...

Outfielder ran back and "found the fence", she did not have to jump up to the ball, but rather put her "punched her glove up" to catch the ball, and then the ball hit the palm of her glove and bounced up and over the fence...

From what I'm hearing...it's a 4 base error...

Thanks guys!

Since she was 2-3 ft from the fence I’d be more inclined to call it a HR. It’s pretty rare for on OF to get that close to the fence without running a significant distance so IMO that takes it beyond ordinary effort.
