8u rec league championship game tonight. Runners on 2&3, ball hit to outfield. Girl from 3 touches home plate and turns around, starts walking on the baseline back to the dugout on 3rd base side. Girl from 2 coming home has to run around her team mate and touches home. Ball is stil out in the field, ump calls 2nd girl out for leaving base path to avoid running into her teammate. Is that correct? There was no defensive play being made.I wasn’t coaching either team btw, just watching. Losing that run cost them the game.

The rule only applies when the defense is attempting to tag the runner, otherwise the runner can run anywhere on the field they like.

Yikes! Was this a volunteer ump, I hope.

Not only is he paid but he is the leagues new head of umpires! Fortunately we are done with rec ball this season and probably for good. My dd and several of her team mates from the rec league "travel" team want to try out for legit travel teams after all stars, fine with me.

There is no baseline established without the ball. You can be in left field and swing it in.

The baseline is established in the rule book. The base path is established by the runner's position at the time the defender is attempting to make a tag of that runner
