Runner on 1st, ball hit hard on the ground in the hole behind second base, 2nd baseman gets to the ball and attempts to field it, bobbles the ball in the dirt and does not make an attempt anywhere... possibly could have gotten runner advancing from 1st to 2nd base with zero shot at batter advancing to 1st base.

I would have ruled it a hit but was scored as E4 and I think it could have been scored as FC as well. What is the correct ruling if the scorer felt like the 2nd baseman could have gotten the out at 2nd base?

"Could have got the out at 2nd base" is irrelevant. Could she have made the out with normal effort at first determines whether it is a hit or not. Description reads like a hit.

Sounds like another "got to see it" play to determine first if there is an E4 on the play. Assuming no error, given that no attempt was made anywhere else and there was zero-shot (scorers judgement) at getting the batter-runner at 1B, it would be a hit.

A fielder choosing to not make a throw, even if you're certain the runner would have been out, is not an error. This is especially true when fielding the ball was especially difficult. Call it a flaw in how plays are scored or whatever, but it is what it is. A scorer can't just say, "Well, I think if she had chosen to throw it there the runner would have been out, so it's an error." Not how it works.

You can give an error if you think there should have been an out at 2B, but it sounds like it was a tough play. Without seeing it I would give a H. You can't give a FC because no play was even attempted.

I'm not so sure about that. If the defensive player fielded the ball cleanly, and would have gotten the out at 1B with normal effort, but elected to hold the ball to freeze a runner on another base, my understanding is that it should be scored an FC.

I'm with Joe on that, if a bobble prevented an out on the bases I would score it as an error most of the time. But this is a judgment call for the scorekeeper and it sounds like we (everyone in this thread) would all read it a little differently.

The reason you can give her an error is that she bobbled the ball. From the sounds of the OP it sounds like a backhand up the middle for F4 so not routine. Since she didn't make a play at 2nd it's very questionable if you could score it a FC as no play was made. So for the hitter it's either a H or an E(if you felt the bobble was normal effort and an out could have been made).

My apologies. I wasn't talking about this specific play, but about FC situations in a broader scope.

On the play as described by the OP, it sounds like a hit is the correct scoring choice.
