There is one out with Runner on Second base. Batter hits ball to 3rd basemen who runs to 3rd and steps on bag like it was a force fielders choice. Oops. What is the right call? This was not a good team not sure if she would have made the Throw to first in time to get the batter.
Mental error base hit.
Fielders choice but it wasn't.
You could say that she was holding the runner at second but that was clearly not her intent.

Personally I think it was a mental error hit scored to the batter.

If you don't think she was getting the batter-runner at first, then it is a hit no matter what she did once she fielded the ball.

If you think there was a chance she got the out if she had thrown it to first, then it is an E5

My understanding is that going to the wrong bag is a mental mistake and not an error (as far as scoring goes).

I would think that if the 3B should have made a play with normal effort then it was a FC.

Had a coach throw a fit last year because local paper ran article that they were no hit in a conference game. The person that ran the article (who is a baseball guy) gave a 3B a FC when a routine ball was hit to him and he checked the runner on 2B double clutched then threw to 1B late. Obviously so did the other team, and that was during the game and not going back after to get the no hitter.

I look at this as a similar situation should have made the play then FC.

My question is more of how to score the batter does she get a HIT, REO or FC?

My gut feeling is she would have gotten her out if she made the throw to first.
My DD is not involved in this play. So my view is not partial.

It all depends on the official scorer's judgement - if the scorer feels that the batter-runner could have been retired at 1B had the initial play by the fielder gone to 1, it is a fielder's choice. If the scorer feel the batter-runner would have beat a direct throw to 1B, then it is a hit.

The attempt to put out an existing runner does not have to be successful for it to be scored a fielder's choice on the batter-runner.

I don't see an error here. A mental brain fart by 3B is not an error.

Agree with this.

If she'd gone to 1 and would've had the out, I'd score it a fielder's choice. No error, just safe at 3.

I do not see a fielders choice as an option at 3rd when the only base runner was on second. Let me pose the question a different way.

No runners on any base with 1 out the batter hits ball to 3rd basemen who runs to third and steps on the bag no throw to first. Clearly this would be a mental error brain fart. When coach asked she says I thought there was a force play at 3rd.

How would you score this?
