Batter hits a line drive over the 3B right shoulder. 3b reaches over her head for it but deflects it into foul territory and the batter gets to 2nd. Ball was hit pretty hard.

Debate in the stands was it should be an error since 3B got a glove on it. I say it is at least single because the ball was hit so hard and it wasn't a normal play for 3B.

I don't suppose you have it on video? Would the average player have caught it with reasonable effort?

Definitely would need to see it. A rocket shot that the 3B can only react to and it deflects off her glove would be a hit. A solid liner but one that the scorekeeper judges the 3B should be able to catch with "ordinary effort" would be an error.

As others have said it's either a double or an E. I would side with double without seeing as it's not ordinary to catch a shot to 3rd in most cases. People sometime confuse doing something that leads to an extra base with an error. You could argue that had she done nothing it would have been a single so she should get an error but that's not how the scoring system works.

From the description I'd say 2B.

Now if it was a lazy line drive that really should have been caught it's an E5. But sounds like a rocket that 3B just couldn't react to in time. But it's one of those you have to see to make a informed decision and that's why the official scorers make the big bucks. Well not really but you get the idea.

This was going to be my answer. When I read OPs description I immediately thought double.

My gut says if it was a lazy liner misplayed the OP wouldn't have had to ask. The confusion starts when people who don't know what they are talking about put the "if it was touched it was an error" logic on it.

Hey guys. Thanks for all of the replies. The ball was hit pretty hard. Definitely not a lazy line drive.
