HS rules using dp/flex. Pitcher gets on coach brings in #7 to courtesy run. Problem is #7 is on line up as our flex. But she is not the flex, coach put wrong # for the true flex. Next batter gets on. Another pitch is thrown to third batter. Defensive coach brings it to the umps attention they huddle and call the courtesy runner out. Is this the correct call?

I believe in that case the player name takes precedence. Change the number on the line up cards and play on.

As long as the name is correct, fix the number and play. NFHS requires a warning to the coach for an incorrect lineup card.

We've run into this a couple of times and the umpires always said name took precedence and if it was a number mistake and not actually batting out of order, you just update the lineup. I never researched it to see if they were right but it was at least twice I can think of in different tournaments with the same response.

I know in rec I've gotten line-ups with just names and no numbers. Our HC has even put the wrong #s for our girls in the line-up.
I've never seen it be an issue though. If there was an issue, I'd have said something when the CR was put on base.
Makes scorekeeping easier if they just get the #s right though ;)

DD got called out in a 9U TB tournament for that a few weeks back. Coach made a mistake with her number (name was correct) and coach from other team came storming out of the dugout
to complain. DD thought she did something wrong and was upset until it was explained to her what happened and then she was mad...lol

Sorry, but if coaches are making a big deal out of this at 9u, they need to get a life...

I see a lot of wacko parents/coaches out there. DD's team beat one of the better team's in their age group last tournament and the parents
of the other team were all in an uproar about a few calls that they thought didn't go their way. I was walking back to civilization from my perch
in the outfield after the game and as I was approaching my wife I asked her what field my DD was playing on next. Well some of these irate parents
hear me and screamed out "Are you talking to US!!!" I just looked at them and shook my head...

HS rules say the name is what must be correct. When I coached middle school ball, I thought this was ridiculous. I didn't know who the heck was Smith and who the heck was Jones on most of the teams we were playing but I sure as heck knew that 8 wasn't 12.

While I agree with you, I've encountered two situations recently when this applied. The first time, the opposing coach wrote down the wrong number (27 instead of 21). I asked the coach what the players name was and it matched up with what was written. No harm, no foul. The second time, plate umpire came over to tell me about substitutions for the other team and he told me "3 for 15." Problem was, 3 was already in the game, and there wasn't a 15 to be found on the roster. I already knew what the problem was and had made the corrections on my own earlier. That school provides two sets of uniforms (with matching numbers) for their players, and then they fundraise to purchase an additional jersey that the girls keep for themselves after the season is over, and they choose whatever number they want to put on it. The players were wearing those special jerseys for this game. So when the coach wrote out his lineup, he put down their regular numbers, not the special jersey numbers. Most of his players' numbers were incorrectly listed, but he had the names correct.

That all being said, I can see how this could be exploited by an unscrupulous coach. For example, say a coach is undecided on who to start between Sally Swingsalot (#2) and Beverly Bunter (#3). Knowing that the name trumps the number, he lists Sally Swingsalot as #3 on the starting lineup. When it is that player's turn to bat, Beverly Bunter bats instead. Number matches up, opposing team doesn't know the player's name, so nothing is said. Beverly Bunter is clearly overmatched and goes down swinging. So the next time that spot in the lineup is due, the coach sends out Sally Swingsalot, who promptly gets a hit. Defense coach, noticing the number is wrong, points out that there is a possible BOO violation. Umpire goes to the offensive coach who "realizes" his mistake and the number gets changed and no penalty is applied. I hope this doesn't happen, but I've seen videos of pitchers intentionally throwing at umpires and catchers elbowing runners as they go by, so I wouldn't be surprised.
