At a recent high school game in IL:

Runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 outs. The batter strikes out on a dropped third strike. Even though the batter is out, she takes off for first base. The base runners are holding their positions, but the catcher throws down to 1st anyways. The throw hits the batter/runner in the helmet and the ball bounces into CF. The girl from 2nd scores and the girl from 1st ends up at 3rd.

The two umpires huddled and allowed the run to score and left the other runner at 3rd, with the batter obviously called out.

I believe that the umpires should have sent the runners back to 2nd and 1st. Should the batting team also have been penalized further for the batter interfering since she really had no right to be running the bases?

Players have to know the rules. Catcher should have known not to throw the ball. This weekend my dd was pitching 2 outs runners on 2nd and 3rd. Count is 1-1 drop ball gets by catcher batter swings at pitch and takes off to 1st runner on 3rd scores runner on 2nd advances to 3rd. Here is where it gets nasty. So batter gets to 1st and starts jogging to 2nd. My dd sees this fires to 2nd makes the tag while runner on 3rd goes home to score. Then offense coach runs out say that’s a live ball. And calls batter back to plate to continue her bat now 1-2. If my dd would have been paying attention to the count she would not have thrown to 2nd and kept the runner on 3rd.

even though the batter never became a batter/runner and had no legal right to be on the field?

Review the drop 3rd strike rule. On a dropped third strike the batter has the right to first base and has to be either tagged out or forced out at first.

Not with 1st occupied and less than 2 outs.

There was only one out and 1st was occupied so the batter was out on strikes. The catcher needed to be aware of the situation. The ball is still live.

agreed, and if she threw the ball away, i believe a case would have to be made that the runner illegally on the field interfered with the play (i swear i've read a ruling on this)

but in this case the batter who is now out had no legal right to be on the field and physically contacted the ball.......gotta think that should be dead ball and no advance?
