This is a situation that came up in the game. Everyone ended up being safe.
Question:
Is the base runner going from 1st to 2nd supposed to be out, because she went backwards? Or does it need to be a Force?

The device I am using will not let me view the video but ...

The batter is not allowed to retreat towards home, they can just stop but not allowed to go back towards home.

Runner on 3rd can go back to 1st as long as they touch 2nd base on their way.

Runners are allowed to retreat.

The rule you are referencing only applies between home and 1st. Anywhere else on the bases and runners can run back up as much as they want.

Plain stupid play by the defense, that runner was still forced to 2nd, why are they chasing her in a rundown? Just throw the ball to 2nd and step on the base.

The force to 2nd was taken off on throw to 1st. (Everyone was not safe, batter was out)

Defense did it right, runner was smart too.

There had to be runner on 3rd that the defense was watching.

As far as I can tell everyone both on offense and defense did a good job.

I see no out call by the umpire on the play, nor a runner anywhere in the frame when the throw does finally go to 1st base. I count 4 seconds from the hit until the throw to 1st base. Even a slow runner in NCAA is faster than 4 seconds home to first speed. When throw comes back to 1st the 2nd time there is a runner standing on the base.

Even in college they will go brain dead. That is the perfect example of why the catcher needs to be calling out the situation with each hitter at every level of play.

It's also an example of how NOT to execute a rundown. Throwing the ball underhand??? It clearly surprised her teammate.

The runner appears to have been forced at 2nd. If you look at the start of the 7 second mark it appears F6 has the ball with her right foot on the bag when she got the throw from F3. What we can't see for 100% sure is if the batter beat the 1st throw from F4 to F3. It does look like the batter beat the throw. You can catch a glimpse of her back up the 1st baseline. If so, the force was still in effect at 2nd base.

If the batter did not beat the first throw the force was removed at 2nd. The announcer stated everyone was safe. But that doesn't mean he wasn't confused too.

I was watching this game, and as it played out, it confused me as well. The batter-runner beat the throw at 1B, and as Sparky said they threw the ball back to 2B with SS covering, but for some reason the runner was still called safe. Everybody was considered safe on the play, and no outs were recorded. In my opinion, at the conclusion of the play, there should have been runners on 1st and 3rd with the runner occupying 2nd should have been out.

It looked to me like the batter/runner crossed first before the throw to first, and the force was still on.

The defense screwed the play up royally. They had runners on 1st and second. Look at the graphic on the screen at the start. I believe they had one out. Hard to tell. All she had to do was pitch the ball to F6 and everything would have been killed at this time with F6 controlling the ball.

The only one who did a good job was the runner. She confused the heck out of the defense.
