Hi , I appreciate any help with understanding how this play would be recorded with scorekeeper .

My daughter plays HS softball and has only been slapping for her second year . Can anyone clear up a scorekeeping question for me ? She hits a dribble towards 3rd and because she is really fast the 3rd baseman fields the ball clean but makes a bad throw to 1st base trying to hurry the paly . My question is the slapper beat out both overthrown balls before they got to 1st base . I believe both touched the 1st baseman's glove as they jumped up to try and catch it . Is this a clear rule/call or a judgment by the scorekeeper ? This has happened several times and twice in the same game the other day with a parent scorekeeper not recording any as hits . I understand a slapper's average will suffer with creating so many infield errors so anything helps .

Thanks in advance for any help !

So you read the entire post ?
If the runner a Left or Right hand batter beats out the throw before it makes it to 1st base even if overthrown your saying it's counted as an error 100% of the time ?

If the batter-runner beats the throw to 1B, it is a base hit regardless of whether 1B caught it or not. Pretty simple concept that many don't grasp.

An error is a failure to make a routine play, not a failure to make an outstanding, excellent, or even above average play. It most certainly isn't a failure to make a play where none was possible in the first place.

Date myself a little bit but Ozzie Smith used to get to balls he had no right getting to. Even though batter-runner was safe do to an overthrow or they just beat it out still no error on Ozzie.

Your DD got on base isn't that the purpose of trying to help the team. Or are you more about the personal stats.

Individual stats often play into coaching decisions. It's not an unreasonable question.

Base hits are sometimes hard to get, and when it happens, the hitter should get credit. I've seen scorekeepers who act like crediting a base hit deducts money from their paycheck.

rdbass . . . Please stay off my thread and do not respond . . .

rdbass I'm not sure why you have such an attitude with me or why you seem angry . I'm guessing you do not represent the culture of this forum with such an attitude to a complete stranger you know nothing about . I understand that I'm new and you may not like simple questions asked by a parent here on YOUR forum ! I'm just a father simply asking for help understanding a particular type play . You do not have to respond with any of your accusations about me or my daughter being for our team or personal stats !!!!

I would like to thank all the kind responses from the polite members that have responded .

No but, it's a question that can probably be answered correctly by being there. A coach is at the game. He can see for his own eyes and not rely on a parent score keeper to dictate his lineup. Again, the goal is to win the game by getting on. OB% doesn't matter?

OB% certainly matters, perhaps more than anything else, but OB% doesn't go up when there's an error entered by a scorekeeper.

Completely agree. Lots of coaches look at batting average and OBP to make the batting order. In some cases personal stats can be the difference between starting and riding pine.

If she would have beat the throw it should be scored as a hit.
