Sorry, but this made me laugh. Are you sure you didn't mean to put your [/sarcasm] tag at the end of this line?? :).

My experience so far (currently 14U TB) is that - overall - there are fewer psycho parents and a-hole coaches as you move up in age. There are always exceptions.

I agree with you. Not a yeller but yelled at parents, all of them, a couple time in 8 and 10U.

The amount of emotions and energy is fun though.

Dropped 3rd strike in 10u rec ball? Can't think of anything that would be more miserable to watch.

There certainly are those moments when it gets pretty ugly. However, catchers at that age are certainly capable of learning to handle D3Ks, and they do. Also at that age, learning the game is a more important concern than how "miserable" it is for adults to watch.

I've seen some games that are pretty bad, but then I've also seen that the 9-year-old girl who dropped every third strike in a game this past fall is holding on to almost every third strike this spring. A lot of girls rise to the occasion if only given the right instruction.

What I also see is girls who learn how to stay calm and just make the play. This comes with experience. Experience is what they get from all those D3Ks in the beginning.

The Double bag confuses me sometimes, like supposedly the runner can choose whichever side is safest to run to and the 1B needs to use the other one? (Again we're talking kids making these quick decisions in the heat of play) Or the deal where the runner is out if they choose the wrong base? Or the runner is safe if the 1B tags the wrong base?
Does every jurisdiction make up their own rules? More than 10 years ago we had one coach who was telling his catchers to throw to the right bag on plays (like those described in the OP) while everyone else in the league played the bag on the line was alwAys the runner and the other bag was always the 1B.
DD at 1B had the misfortune of being steamrolled by a freight train if a baserunner when the catcher's throw drew her into the base path and the oncoming train, when DD was already set up in the clear on the other side (as instructed by Kevin Youklis)

The umpire needs to control the field of play and direct the base coach to back away from the line. This is a player safety issue and most umpires vigorously enforce this rule. You do not need to be in the actual coaches box, just respect the distance from home plate and the baseline. If he refuses he view the game from the parking lot.

You are absolutely correct. However... 10U rec usually has kids umpiring the games or younger umpires withe little experience. Easy for a coach to intimidate.

The runner must hit the orange bag. The white is reserved for the fielder.
