Is IF even called prior to 12U? In our rec league it didn't start until 12U

Rec leagues can make any rules they want. USA softball used to have a different set of rules for 10U but dropped them about 10 or so years ago. Some leagues do use IFF, some don't. It is impossible to cover every rule option of every league across the country. All major rule sets use the IFF.

It was always supposed to be called in DD's leaques, including 8U.

Ball in the air was an adventure but the players, and coaches started learning rule. Not called very often that I remember.

When DD was in 10U, at the Rec All-Star WS, they had to learn D3S and IF even though that was the first tournament they'd seen it.
D3S is definitely harder to deal with when you're first exposed to it ;)

In DD's league the girls get used to it pretty quickly. And if they forget, coach will scream "RUN!!!!" and even if they don't know why they're doing it, they run.

It's hard on the catcher too. On DD's rec team, they have a catcher who really just starting catching last season and doesn't always catch the ball. She's gotten a lot better with practice but sometimes they just forget "when" D3S applies. I would always try to remind her when it applied and non SB DD said I should just get myself a shirt that said "Squeeze it Sarah" Season just started back up and she's one of our catchers again and I get to say it again!

Interestingly (and it hasn't been long, DD has only been in 10U since the fall), I've never seen a catcher forget. The defense is always ready. Hitters, on the other hand....

Our rec league started D3K (and IF) in 10U, also. Catchers learn pretty fast (usually). There are lots of quick reminders you can use, too, if the catcher isn't all the way up to speed on remembering. At 10U, though, expect that there will be times when a D3K throw ends up down the RF line, and F9 is still looking at the play (or the ground) without moving her feet. The D3K-HR is a definite possibility. It's part of the game at that level. Making mistakes is how they learn.

Definitely the umps judgement, and I'd rather have them err on the side of not calling it on a short bloop or, even worse, something in the shallow OF rather default to the "if it's in the air, call it" position.
