DJ -

1. As you described it, I'm kind of surprised a team would try to do this. Seems pretty bush league.
2. Thinking about it more, and even though I still have barely gotten my feet wet into the craziness of HS/TB, I think I'm now more surprised I haven't read on DFP about MORE instances of this occurring (maybe b/c it's rare for JV and Varsity to be playing at the same time and/or location?)
3. Correcting myself again - probably most surprised that there aren't already eligibility rules in place addressing this situation. Again - I'm blissfully ignorant of the nuances of HS athletics, but it doesn't seem very sportsmanlike to play at both the Varsity and JV levels in the same day. And I'm sure I'd feel differently if it was my daughter involved, but I'm not sure how fair it would be even if they only "dressed" for (but didn't play in) the Varsity game.

Glad to hear they still pulled out the win, though.

Obviously this is school size and location dependent. Again depending on the situation you can have a small group of girls that float from JV to varsity (usually they don't see much time on varsity but are being developed)....I will grant that these girls were not Varsity Studs by any stretch of the imagination which is probably why our coach did not raise of fuss....our JV was basically a freshman team with most of the girls having some experience but only a couple girls played travel, the rest are what I would consider good rec players. Again it was about three or four players only and when you substitute your bottom four girls on a JV team for girls with the bottom four girls from your Varsity team it's a pretty big difference especially since one was a pitcher although to be fair we had a pretty good pitcher too but per the post she was being squeezed because we were winning pretty handily up until that point.

MLB umps actually do use the "strike zone" technology as a tool during evaluations. It's not the only thing and is not considered full proof but is is a tool they use to help improve and learn.

They turned the "strike zone" off this year during the WCWS because it showed how pathetic some of the umpires strike zones really were.

It seems that fastpitch strike zone is lower than the baseball strike zone in our area. In each tournament that we have played in it seems that one umpire has been really bad. We seem to get the bad one twice and always in the championship game. The best umpire always has the field in the championship game. I wouldn't have their job!

We see most umpires over and over again, they are all OK and consistent.

New one called strikes at top of head, did not enjoy that but they were consistent.

Batters did not have a chance. They were trying to tomahawk everything.

I always thought the rules were if a kid played on either JV or V they could not play on the other team on the same day.

Probably varies with location and definition of "play" (very good chance these kids did not play). Plus JV around here while taken seriously to some degree....everyone understands it all just really practicing and preparing for Varsity, you aren't going to find a box score or score for the matter posted anywhere.

If you could have a machine call balls and strikes with laser like precision would you really want that? I say no as I enjoy the human element of it all. As long as umpires are consistent it all evens out in the end.

As I understand Indiana rules, they can not play both if the games start at same time and are planned to play simultaneously. If the games are played as a DH where varsity plays first and JV plays after then they could have played in both. That is of course assuming that they are not starters in varsity or regular players.

I never thought the "at least the ump was consistent" comment made sense. As a hitter you spend hours trying to learn how to read the strike zone and all of a sudden they start calling pitches 6 inches outside strikes for one game? If we are talking inches that's fine, but to expect your kids to swing at crap just because the PU is off on his strike zone seems a bit odd.

For the most part outside of one group of umpires we usually have very good ones. They might miss a few, but overall are pretty good. One thing that I notice is that many umpires seems to "extend" the outside corner on lefties. Maybe it's just having a lefty DD, but it seems like looking over the other shoulder just throws them off a little. Has anyone else ever noticed that?
