10 u tournament this past weekend, DD2's first real tournament. DD2 also plays soccer. Because it is fall, we told both coaches that in fall, soccer is #1, in spring softball will be #1. softball coach is fine with this, will see how soccer coach reacts in spring.

because of the game times, DD2 was able to play in all tournament games, but had to leave championship game (and her team made it, lost 2-1) about 1 hour in. coach was informed of this days in advance, no issue, other girls had to miss games as well.

I want to make certain we don't cause coach headaches, should I just have held my daughter out of championship game entirely? listening (not eavesdropping, was simply finding any available shade, was over 90 and brutal sun on Sunday), coach was explaining to girl from one of her older teams who helps her that because my DD would leave early, instead of having entire team in lineup (they were doing CBO, some other rule mods to) one player would have to be a sub for my daughter, because otherwise, when her spot in lineup came up after she left, it would be an out. Is this correct. ASA rules I believe except for mods (no stealing home, CBO allowed, 10 on field allowed, 5 run limit per inning).

Is it a continuous batting order or only bat 10?

I jumped over the CBO acronym. :)

Should be in tourney rules, here as long as a batter is removed from game entirety there is no penalty when their spot comes up.

Without knowing the rules you were playing it sounds like the coach was correct. If you are playing real ASA rules you can't bat your entire line anyway. In general what I've seen is that if you bat the entire lineup it's an out when that player comes up if they are hurt or leave it's an out. Sometimes it's only the first time.

I understand the issue with other sports but if you were on my team I would never start a player in a game I knew they couldn't finish. It's not a punishment just the way it is. We have the same issue on our 18U team when some have to go to work at times.

Sounds like the coach knew what he was doing, allowing your DD to play, guessing she was one of the best nine available but it limits his options somewhat because he knows he will have to sub her out (and she won't available to reneter).

In the end if your DD is one of the best nine as a coach I would want her to stay as long as she could and work out the rest, as the coach that's my job in the championship game field the best team to win (I would assume your are working out all your other goals of participation, players in different positions and other things BEFORE the championship game).

Your coach got it right. If a lineup spot is vacated, it's an out the next time through. There are some exceptions in some rules, where a player who leaves for an injury won't lead to an automatic out, but I don't know your league well enough to speak on those issues. I am assuming that you're playing rules similar to what we have here where in 10U games the coaches can bat the entire team instead of just 9, and the one who was sitting was confused why she wasn't hitting and everyone else was.

If your HC did CBO, and someone left the game, then that's an out. It sounds like your coach wanted her there because she accommodated the line-up for your DD and let her play as long as she could.

And good for you for being honest and upfront, and also for letting her play. They made it to the championship, getting to play is a great reward for the efforts of the weekend!

Coach was on the ball and correct. Speaking USA/ASA softball, any position in the batting order which is vacated for any reason other than an ejection is an out each time that position is due to bat. Just FYI, there are NO contingencies in the rule alleviating the effect.

Thanks, I think she is in top 9, but that is of course subjective. If the coach had said, sorry, not going to play her, I would have been Ok with that as well (and she scored, so she did contribute, walked and got batted in).

now just got to talk to coach to see what she needs to do to move up in order. This weekend she had several BBs, two HBP, and one sacrifice ground out (scored a run), no Ks, but she batted in bottom three entire tournament. Would have liked to seen her a little more aggressive (a few of the balls she got were 50/50 pitches, but she does not swing at garbage), even if it meant one or two of the BB turned into Ks.

Also what to do to get more innings behind the plate and at some at 1B (definitely think she is competitive with other girls I saw there, a little shorter, but good glove, and good instincts, we gave up 1 run in championship game because F3 did not move for a ball that she definitely should have had, and let F4 cover 1B, runner eventually scored, was a 2-1 loss). For C, blocks and receives well, needs to work on throws to second, does very well throwing down to 3rd.
