My only issue with the infield fly rule is that the umpire should be required to yell out infield fly and not just signal it. It is difficult for both girls and base coaches to watch the play and and look to see if the umpire has raised their hand. I really appreciate it when an umpire does yell it out but it is less than half the time in my experience.

It is a requirement and standard practice that a verbal is included with the Infield Fly signal.....

However, with all the parents and coaches yelling RUN!...NO, GET BACK, SHE DROPPED IT....GO! THROW THE BALL! TAG HER!, etc, etc.......the umpires call is often not heard.......

The umpire does verbalize "infield fly". Even notes the condition may change should the ball go foul. Not only is it the coaches' responsibility to observe this and direct the runners appropriately, but it is also their responsibility to be aware of the game conditions and KNOW when the IF is in effect.

I understand the rule completely, and if I'm playing I'm never confused by it or what everybody should do.

But I have no idea how to teach it to girls who are still learning the game.

Set up a diamond with 25' bases. Put a girl on each base. Stand in the middle and throw a ball up in the air that would simulate a pop-up. Have them get off of the bases. Yell out "Infield fly batter is out." Then randomly catch the ball, drop the ball and let it hit the ground untouched. Then you'll see who understands the rule. You can have the other coaches doing the same thing at the same time in another diamond on the field.

Very easy way to get tons of reps in quickly while making corrections without having to yell and scream across the field.

I tried something similar during one of our inside practices in the spring, but it wasn't as effective as I think this will be. Thanks for the tip.

You have to be a pretty bad umpire to screw up the infield fly, one of, if not THE easiest rule in the book.

I actually think it is a little more complicated than no leaping or no replanting, umps screw that up everyday of the week.

It cannot be simpler. What do you feel is so complicated about it?

I don't think it is complicated at all but it is more complicated than the pitching rules that fail to get enforced. So it is not the easiest.

At 8 and 10U there was almost always chaos when infield fly rule was called.

Older ages the fielder usally catches it so a lot less chaos, if they drop it though chaos again.

Runners and fielders are running every which way.

Lot of fun!

Parents and coaches are all yelling conflicting advice to fielder and runners. Go back, go to next base. Throw it to 1st, throw it to 3rd. :)
