Playing the 5th game at 14u ASA on the same field. DD pitched well the first inning but came back and said she was dragging across something metal. It was tearing the toe off her cleats. I asked field ump to look at it and found that the 40' tubes had no plugs. Ump says there is nothing that can be done. It just got worse as the game went on. 2nd inning I called time and asked for the hp ump to look at it. All I got was maybe she should change her foot position on the rubber. Should I have asked for the UIC?

You could, but what would you expect him to do? This is a TD issue.

This has been an issue in a couple local tournaments. We received the same response. Sometimes it's better to change pitchers, if there is another available. It got in my DD's head, plus it hurts. We went through a pair of cleats in one tournament, it helped us discover Ringers.

Thanks for the input. I did speak with both the TD and the UIC the next day. Both stated that there was really nothing that could be done but the UIC acknowledged that the issue had been brought up by numerous teams and they would allow a shift in foot position including allowing the non drive foot to be outside the rubber. She now has the tough toe on her cleats to help since we are back there this weekend.

Take a set of plugs with you and let the TD know. After a few tournaments where things were not set up right I keep tape measure, plugs, hammer, base tool, and shovel in my trunk. Only had to use them twice in last 4 years, but have seen several games where we were not involved and there were issues. Player safety is a coaches first responsibility.
