The ball can be in hand or glove when they step on. No requirement for it to be in hand only.

Presenting = stepping onto the mound with the ball in the throwing hand, not in the glove.

No. "Presenting" is an archaic term where the pitcher was required to "show" the ball. IOW, couldn't keep it in the glove or behind the back. Like I said, archaic yet it is still argued especially in the SP game. There are different requirements of the pitcher in today's game including NOT having a mound on the field.

I have no idea what the walking to the back of the circle violation was either - he called it on the other team, so I only heard his call from the field, and not the explanation he gave the pitcher.

The only thing I can think of is that the pitcher received the ball while still in contact with the PP and did not disengage prior to the next pitch. Rarely, if ever seen in the FP game and it is a stretch to think of this being the actual call. Otherwise, you have an umpire working the MSU rule book.

The pause - I talked to our pitcher about that. She said she does it on purpose once in a while because she feels she gets a bit more speed out of it. Basically she steps on the rubber and goes, she feels it gives her a little more (like a walk-on) but watching her, there is really no difference. She is just hurrying the pitch.

That is an IP. She must step onto the PP and pause (simulate taking a signal is the term used) prior to bringing her hands together.

Pet peeve: their is no mound in softball. 😎

Disclaimer: I've never touched a Softball Canada nor ISF rule book so I'm speaking USA Softball

The pitcher must step on with hands separated and the ball in either the glove or the pitching hand. Now granted most have it in pitching hand, and if they step on with ball in glove hand then bring hands together to transfer ball to pitching hand they are probably going to IP by double touching but simply starting with ball in glove hand while unusual is fine.

The rule for Softball Canada and ISF is that the pitcher must simulate taking a signal with ball in one hand and then, after putting the hands together, "must bring the whole body to a full and complete stop" (for 1-10 seconds in Canada, 2-5 seconds in ISF).
